I don’t know how many people are visiting the holiday park in worcestershire this year, but it seems to be very busy. This is very good news for the village as our shops and tea rooms have been very busy. The local hotel is booked out for dinner most nights as well, it seems to be boom time again. I remember years ago it was like this and then came the cheap package holiday to the continent, where the holiday makers went in droves. It seems to have come full circle again and the holiday makers are back in their droves.

Some experts are saying that the growth and rise in value of property for sale in Toronto is nothing short of miraculous. With other markets in North America and around the would still struggling to keep their heads above water in this recession Toronto seems to be fairing much better than anyone expected. It does not appear to matter if you are buying or selling a single family home or a condo. Sales are up and so are prices. But some are of the opinion that this is being largely fueled by first time home buyers who were reluctant to purchase earlier in the year. Only time will tell if this is indeed the case and if the growth can be sustained until the end of the year.

We’re selling my Mother’s house in Berkeley. She’s gotten too old to stay in the rickety old wreck. It’s a 1920’s Spanish style house that was originally heated with coal, then converted to fuel oil and finally natural gas.The 500 gallon fuel oil tank is still in the ground and has some residual oil in it. Our realtor advises us it has to come out as the buyer won’t accept the liability for it and the lender won’t lend because they consider it a possible cloud on the title. Very well and good.My competitive bid supplied by a company that does this all the time is about $9,000 and that’s assuming the tank has not leaked fuel oil into the ground. If we pull the tank and there’s a leak, then were looking at an additional $4,000 or possibly more.A huge portion of the total bill is for permitting by various agencies. Here’s what’s involved: Utility company to mark out location of possible gas and electric before we dig; Berkeley Fire Department to issue a Tank Modification Permit; OSHA Health and Safety Plan; Notice and permit from Alameda Department of Health, Bureau of Toxic Health and Safety Services; Application and permit from California Department of Industrial Relations for any hole deeper than 5 feet; Application to Bay Area Air Quality Management District; Berkeley Department of Public Works for a permit to have heavy equipment on the street; Berkeley Police to set and enforce a tow away zone at the curb; Last but certainly not least, Berkeley Department of Parking and Traffic because we will be moving a tank onto the public thoroughfare. This all before a single shovel full of dirt is turned.Then there is the actual removal of the tank, it’s contents, wash water from flushing the tank, reduction of explosive environment inside the tank, removal and disposal of possibly diesel contaminated dirt and etc. For sure, we will have the cleanest 80 year old cast iron tank on the planet before it goes to the metal recycler!I remember when environmental regulations in the America were so lax that the pollution choked Cuyahoga River in Ohio actually caught fire in 1969. That river was a oily stinking mess in which absolutely everything died and was a national disgrace and symbol of our absolute disregard for the health of the planet.
