How Many Anniversary Rings

I have often wondered something and I have wondered this for years. How Many Anniversary Rings are etiquettely correct to give or receive? Are you supposed to receive/give one in a specific number of years time/frame or something? Speaking on an etiquette level, how many (should you have more than one) should you wear at any given time? It just boggles the mind for me as this is a subject that I have always pondered on but never saw it as a subject anywhere. In my minds eye I would think save that very specific piece of jewelry with that special meaning behind it for a specific time of longevity with that special someone.
