What is compressed air?

November 27th, 2009

Compressed air is air collected by compressors and stored in high pressure in especially designed pressure tanks. In the humid tropics, like the Northern Territory, the air contains a lot of water vapor and when air is compressed, all the moisture condenses into liquid water. The moisture in compressed air has to be removed using an air-water separator otherwise corrosion will occur. Compressed air used to be largely produced using reciprocating or piston type compressors. Although they can attain satisfying performance, reciprocating pumps need adequate lubrication and the mechanism is not as simple as the other type of equipment used in making compressed air which is the rotary air compressor. The rotary air compressor has simpler parts and operates much more smoothly than piston pumps. The up and down reciprocating motion of such pumps tend to create a lot of vibration which when left unchecked, will cause damage to the equipment itself.
