Where Can I Find Out More About Mortgages?

I am interested in buying a house, but first I want to do my research so that I am a well informed consumer. Can anyone tell me where I can find out more about mortgages and how they work? This would really help me out. I want to know what type of mortgage I want when I call the home mortgage lender for a quote. I will call around to a few of them to see who will give me the best deal on the type of mortgage I have chosen. I am hoping I can afford a large enough mortgage to purchase the house that I really want.
