The Harvest of Acai Berries

February 17th, 2009

The Amazon Rainforest is the only place that this extremely rare fruit can be found.  The fruit grows at the top of a palm tree called the acai palm and has a thin trunk that stretches about 30 feet high and has leafy branches.  The Acai Berry can be harvested two times a year and each tree has large amounts of dark purple berries.  The fruit has a very short life span and must be harvested within a 24 hour span.  The fruit is then transferred by boat where it is process as quickly as possible into juice, pill form or dried powder.
