If you are considering any investments in commercial retail properties right now, it would be wise to focus your money on grocery anchored retail centers. Many of the country’s major grocery stores have seen an increase in sales as people cut back on eating out. Having a retail property that is anchored by a tenant selling necessities like food will hold up much better than those relying on clothing and electronics retailers. If consumer spending continues to decline, these tenants are likely to have even more problems and property values will drop due to the uncertainty surrounding the anchors. Until things settle down in the markets, it is best to stay away from these properties.
